New Delhi:
The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), a multinational project that aims to replicate the energy of the Sun, is a perfect example of the ancestral Indian belief “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.
The start of assembly of the ITER Tokamak, the world‘s largest fusion device, was celebrated in Saint-Paul-Lez-Durance, France on Tuesday.
Heads of State from all ITER member countries participated either in person or electronically via remote mode or delivered their message.
The celebration was organized virtually by President Emmanuel Macron.
PM Modi’s message came from India’s envoy to France Jawed Achraf.
“Noting the worldwide participation of scientists and engineers, he (the Prime Minister) projected that ITER was a perfect illustration of India’s ancestral belief – Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the whole world is working together for the sake of humanity, “a statement from the Department of External Affairs said.
ITER Organization (IO) is the core team responsible for on-site construction and operation, while ITER partners have created their own national agencies to honor their commitments to ITER. ITER-India is the Indian domestic agency.
Its partners are the European Union, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States. The European Union, which is the host side, contributes 45%, while the other parties contribute 9% each. Most of these contributions are made through “in kind” purchases of ITER components.
PM Modi added that India was proud of its fair share of contributions in terms of in-kind contributions, such as the cryostat, in ship shields, substantial contributions to cooling water, cryogenic systems and cryo -distribution, auxiliary heaters using RF and beam technologies, multi-megawatt power supplies and several diagnostics to help ITER achieve and demonstrate its goal.
