Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Monday discussed developments in the security situation in the region and other areas of mutual and bilateral interest, the prime minister’s office said.

During a phone call, the two also exchange their Eid-ul-Adha greetings.

President Ghani thanked Prime Minister Modi for the timely provision of food and medical assistance to meet Afghan needs.

Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s commitment to the Afghan people in their quest for a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive Afghanistan, according to the PMO statement.

“The two leaders also exchanged views on the evolution of the security situation in the region and other areas of mutual and bilateral interest,” he said.

The phone call came amid reports that Afghan forces had taken over a prison in the east of the country, a day after the Islamic State terrorist group attacked the facility in which at least 29 people were killed. .
