Prime Minister Narendra Modi today had wide-ranging talks with his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa, covering the full spectrum of bilateral relations and emphasizing the further expansion of cooperation in areas keys.
In his opening remarks at a virtual bilateral summit, Prime Minister Modi said he was convinced that the massive electoral victory of the ruling Sri Lanka party, backed by the policies of the Rajapaksa government, will facilitate deeper cooperation between the two. country.
“An opportunity has come to open a new chapter in relations between India and Sri Lanka after your party’s electoral victory. People from both countries are looking at us with new hope and new expectations,” Prime Minister Modi.
Mahinda Rajapaksa was sworn in as Sri Lankan prime minister for a new term on August 9 after her party, the Popular Front of Sri Lanka, won a two-thirds majority in the parliamentary elections.
Prime Minister Modi said that India is prioritizing its relations with Sri Lanka by referring to the neighborhood policy of its government as well as the SAGAR doctrine (Security and Growth for All in the Region).
It was Prime Minister Modi’s first virtual bilateral engagement with a leader of a neighboring country. For Prime Minister Rajapaksa, it was the first diplomatic engagement with a leader of a foreign country after being sworn in as Prime Minister.
It was learned that the two leaders had deliberated on a host of issues such as how to further deepen general defense and trade relations as well as expanding existing cooperation in several key areas.
