Donald Trump said, “I think it’s a good thing to wear a mask.”

Washington:

US President Donald Trump wore a face mask in public for the first time on Saturday, finally yielding to intense pressure to lead by example in public health as the coronavirus is unleashed across America.

Trump wore a black mask as he crossed the corridors of the Walter Reed Military Hospital outside Washington to meet injured veterans.

Trump walked past reporters and kept telling them about what had become a long-awaited moment – his possible change of mind about a practice recommended by the government’s own medical experts, even though he resisted.

“I think it is a good thing to wear a mask. I have never been against masks but I believe they have a time and a place,” said Trump as he left the White House.

Colleagues practically begged the president to give in and wear a mask in public – and have his photo taken while wearing it – as coronavirus cases soar in some states and Trump is lagging behind, reports said this week Democrat Joe Biden in the polls before the November election.

Trump has firmly defended his administration’s management of the pandemic, even though the United States is the hardest hit country in the world.

The country recently experienced several days of more than 60,000 new cases, nearly 135,000 people died and states had to figure out for themselves how to reopen without a clear and coherent White House strategy.
