Washington:
President Donald Trump warned Iran on Wednesday against the execution of three people who allegedly participated in protests in November 2019.
“Three people have been sentenced to death in Iran for participating in protests,” he tweeted.
“The execution is awaited momentarily. The execution of these three people sends a terrible signal to the world and should not be done!”
The Iranian judiciary said on Tuesday that a court had confirmed the death sentences for criminal actions during protests last November caused by rising oil prices.
The reformist newspaper Shargh named the three Amirhossein Moradi, a 26-year-old man who worked at a cellphone retailer; Said Tamjidi, a 28-year-old student; and Mohammad Rajabi, also 26 years old.
Iran blamed last year’s violence on “thugs” backed by its enemies the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Protests erupted after authorities more than doubled fuel prices overnight, exacerbating economic hardship in the sanctions-hit country.
Fuel pumps were set on fire, police stations attacked and shops looted, before security forces intervened in the midst of an almost complete blackout on the Internet.
A senior Iranian lawmaker said in June that 230 people had been killed and thousands more injured during the protests.
The United States has claimed that more than 1,000 people have been killed.
