Vatican City:
Pope Francis on Wednesday called for national reconciliation in the United States, saying that if racism is intolerable, the street violence that has broken out is “self-destructive and self-destructive”.
Francis broke his silence on tensions in the United States, which saw eight nights of protests against the death of a black man in police custody, by devoting the entire English-speaking section of his weekly audience to the turmoil there.
He called the death of George Floyd “tragic”, said he prayed for him and all those who died as a result of the “sin of racism”, and said he was deeply disturbed by the social unrest which followed.
“My friends, we cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form and yet pretend to defend the sanctity of every human life,” said Francis.
“At the same time, we must recognize that the violence of the last nights is self-destructive and destructive. Nothing is won by violence and so much is lost,” he said.
He asked the Americans to implore God for “the national reconciliation and the peace to which we aspire” and asked the Madonna “to intercede for all those who work for peace and justice in your country and in the world” .
