Now is the perfect time to invest in India and the country welcomes investment in the technology sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, said on Monday.
In a virtual interaction with Krishna, the Prime Minister noted that as the world witnessed a slowdown, FDI inflows into India increased.
Prime Minister Modi said the country is moving forward with the vision of a self-sufficient India to develop a globally competent and resilient local supply chain to disruption, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office.
Speaking of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on corporate culture, the Prime Minister said that “homework” is widely adopted and that the government is constantly striving to provide infrastructure, connectivity and a regulatory environment to ensure that this technological change is smooth.
PM Modi also discussed associated technologies and the challenges involved in IBM’s recent decision to make 75% of its employees work at home, the statement said.
The CEO of IBM briefed the Prime Minister on his company’s huge investment plans in India and expressed confidence in the vision of “Aatma nirbhar Bharat” (an independent India), the statement said.
“The Prime Minister stressed that this is the perfect time to invest in India. He said that the country welcomes and supports current investments in the technology sector. He noted that while the world is in the process of slow, FDI flows to India were increasing, “the statement said.
During the interaction, PM Modi explored the possibilities of creating India-specific artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the healthcare sector and developing better models for prediction and disease analysis.
He stressed that the country is moving towards the development of an integrated, technology-based and data-driven health care system that is affordable and hassle free for the people.
PM Modi noted that IBM can play an important role in advancing the vision of healthcare.
Krishna appreciated the Prime Minister’s vision for Ayushman Bharat (the whole of India’s health care system) and spoke of the use of technology for the early identification of diseases.
PM Modi appreciated the role played by IBM, in association with CBSE, in launching the AI program in 200 schools in India.
He said the government is working to introduce students to concepts such as AI and early machine learning to promote the technological temperament in the country.
Krishna said that teaching technology and data should be in the basic skills category like algebra, which must be taught with passion and should be introduced early.
Other areas of discussion include data security issues, cyber attacks, privacy concerns, and the health benefits of yoga.
PM Modi also congratulated Krishna on becoming the world leader of IBM earlier this year.
He mentioned IBM’s strong connection to India and its huge presence in the country, with more than a lakh of people working in 20 of the company’s cities.
