Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tribute to one of the icons of the struggle for freedom in India, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, on the occasion of his 100th death anniversary, saying that his intelligence, courage and idea of “swaraj” continue to inspire people.
He also shared a brief video from one of his “Mann ki Baat” programs in which he spoke of Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s efforts to unite the people against British rule.
“India bow to Lokmanya Tilak on the occasion of her 100th punya tithi (death anniversary). Her intellect, courage, sense of justice and idea of Swaraj (autonomy) continue to inspire” , tweeted Prime Minister Modi.
The Prime Minister recalled how Bal Gangadhar Tilak spoke about self-confidence among the people and gave the slogan “Swaraj is our birthright and I will have it”.
