New Delhi:

Shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on Sunday afternoon about making “toys for the world,” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a sarcastic blow to the prime minister and called on India to become a “toy hub”.

Lakhs of students protesting against the conduct of JEE and NEET exams during the Covid crisis would have preferred a “pariksha pe charcha (discussion on exams) “on one”khilona pe charcha (toy talk), ”Gandhi said in his tweet.

“The JEE-NEET aspirants wanted the PM to do it”pariksha pe charcha“but the PM did it”khilone pe charcha, “Rahul Gandhi tweeted adding the hashtag”#Mann_Ki_Nahi_Students_Ki_Baat“.

The Prime Minister, during his monthly speech on the radio Mann ki Baat, the toys declared were “very important for the development of children” and that India is expected to become a world leader in its manufacture.

“There is a rich tradition of local toys in our country. There are many talented and skilled artisans who have expertise in making good toys … India has the talent and the ability to become a center of toys in making toys for the whole world ”, quoted the Prime Minister by the ANI news agency.

He also estimated the global toy market to be worth Rs 7 lakh crore and said it was “not fair” for India to have a “very small” share in this market.

Mr Gandhi’s latest dig – he has consistently criticized the government on a myriad of issues – comes amid pressure from students and opposition parties over the decision to hold joint entrance exams (JEE ) and the National Eligibility Test (NEET) in September.

The conduct of exams – for entry to IIT and medical school – during the pandemic has been contested by students and stakeholders, who say health and safety must take precedence over academics at this time.

India has seen an extremely worrying increase in Covid cases over the past month and now has over 35 lakh of confirmed infections, of which more than 63,000 deaths and 7.65 lakh are active cases.

The NEET and JEE exams should take place despite these concerns; the Supreme Court dismissed a petition earlier this month to postpone them, saying “students’ careers could not be jeopardized”.

The government has released a list of guidelines for keeping students and proctors safe during exams, but a group of opposition chief ministers have expressed fears their governments will be blamed if, as expected. , Covid cases rise after mass public gatherings like the exams.

The same group of opposition chief ministers – led by Mamata Banerjee of Bengal and interim congressional leader Sonia Gandhi – contacted the highest court to request a review of its Aug. 17 order allowing the exams.

The JEE (main) is scheduled for September 1-6, while the NEET (UG) exam is scheduled for September 13.
