Siliguri / Kolkata:

Heavy rains hit northern Bengal districts, causing flooding in low-lying areas of Jalpaiguri and other places on Saturday, even as the MeT department forecast heavy to very heavy showers in the region for the next two days .

Several places in the Mainaguri block were flooded due to heavy rain, officials said.

People in lower areas are being moved to safer places, they said.

Several areas of Siliguri have also seen waterlogging due to the incessant rains.

Heavy to very heavy rains are likely to occur in the districts of Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Coochbehar, the Met department said.

Jalpaiguri recorded 93mm of precipitation in 24 hours until 8:30 a.m., while Siliguri recorded 61.4mm, he said.

The meteorologist forecast a thunderstorm Sunday in Gangetic West Bengal.

Showers also hit Kolkata in the evening, causing traffic rumblings in parts of the city.
