Paris:
A huge noise that panicked residents of Paris on Wednesday was caused by a sound boom as a military plane broke the speed of sound, police in the French capital said.
“A very loud noise was heard in Paris and in the Paris region. It was not an explosion, it was a fighter plane breaking through the sound barrier,” Paris police said on their Twitter account, urging people stop calling emergency telephone lines.
The noise, which spread throughout the city and shook the windows, shook already restless Parisians after a knife attack outside the former offices of satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo last week that the government called act of terror.
Wednesday’s incident caused confusion, with people being asked on social media about a noise heard throughout the city but which left no trace of damage.
This was clearly heard during the Roland Garros tennis tournament, where star player Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland and his German opponent Dominik Koepfer paused in astonishment and concern as the noise echoed around the stadium.
Last Friday, two people were injured in the knife attack by a man wielding a meat cleaver outside the former Charlie Hebdo offices in central Paris.
The attack came three weeks after the trial in Paris of suspected accomplices in the January 2015 attacks against Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket.
Seventeen people were killed over the three days of violence, including Charlie Hebdo staff and a policewoman.
The bloodshed heralded a wave of Islamist violence in France that has so far claimed 258 lives. The country remains alert in the face of the risks of terrorism.
