His roles may have been varied but there is always an attempt to The role of Pankaj Tripathi to keep his characters contemporary, something that the actor says reflects his own need to remain conscious as a human being.
Tripathi ends 2020 on a high note with Ludo, The highly anticipated set of Anurag Basu where he plays the crucial role of Sattu, a wise man beyond the years, sometimes endearing but otherwise dangerous gangster. It was a character that Basu said he wrote with Tripathi in mind.
Asked about the philosophical vision that binds his characters from Sacred Games, Stree, Newton, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Mirzapur at his latest movie, the actor said he might have something to do like he is in real life.
“Yes, there is something like that in my dialogue. I don’t know why it’s there, maybe it’s because I try to keep my characters contemporary. Since people have social media, I believe that as an actor cinema is my medium where I should be able to tell everything that is going on in the world through my characters, ”Tripathi told PTI in an interview.
The 44-year-old actor, from the village of Belsand in the Gopalganj district of Bihar, joked that even ordinary people in the Poorvanchal region usually speak in a philosophical tone.
“But the consciousness that I have as a human being, I want my characters to have it even if they come from different worlds. I feel that consciousness has nothing to do with education. has a term that people use these days called “awake.” I want my characters to stay aware and sometimes even ordinary dialogue spoken a certain way can sound philosophical, ”he added.
Ludo, a dark comedy inspired by the popular indoor game, carries four stories with Sattu of Tripathi acting as the dice.
Basu said that Tripathi’s character had a “domino effect,” affecting all other stories and, in the process, ended up having his own story.
There is a romantic track involving Sattu and Nurse Latha (played by Shalini Vats) while he is hospitalized after a series of accidents.
In one of the scenes, the Tripathi character spreads his arms, forgetting that he is walking on crutches, and the actor said he does not remember whether the gesture, popularized by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan , was deliberate or spontaneous.
“When you see cinema, sometimes you cannot realize whether a particular element has come to the cinema from the society or whether the cinema has brought it to the society. You will find plenty of real life gangsters behaving in a filmed way and there are plenty of them in real life weddings happening just like they did in the movies.
“Sometimes the reality is more fictional and we try to find realism in the cinema. It won’t be surprising that many young people are using this gesture (spreading their arms) in real life now because it is so popular. Maybe Sattu watches a lot of movies, “he said.
The actor said Basu was responsible for his’ 70s hero-style entry into the film, which was changed from what was originally intended.
Tripathi said he had fun playing the character who went through many comedic crashes during the film, sometimes being thrown off a bridge or run over by a car.
“I’ve never done so much action. Sometimes I fall off the roof, or I hang from a crane and then fall. Every day on the set, I knew I had a new action scene.”
“I have never filmed so many accident scenes in any movie and what is interesting is that I had injured my back in a real accident before filming. So I wasn’t very confident doing all of these scenes but I did.
Mirzapur started streaming last month on Amazon Prime Video and now Ludo comes to Netflix following the success of Gunjan saxena, making it a great year for Tripathi, but the actor said he was not someone who thinks too much.
“My journey started in 1996 in a theater. It’s been almost 24 years. It’s a journey of hope and aspiration that proves this world is not as bad as it sounds. If you’re honest in your work and you have talent, it is rare that this talent is wasted, ”said the graduate of the National School of Dramatic Art.
“It takes time, like everywhere else. People give me a lot of love and as I always say, there is no logic in love.”Maine bhi nahi khojta (Me neither, I am not looking for it) ”, he added.
Ludo, also along with Abhishek Bachchan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Rajkummar Rao, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Rohit Saraf, Pearl Maaney, Inayat Verma and Asha Negi, is expected to be released on Thursday.
