Islamabad:
Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi announced on Friday that he had tested positive for coronavirus and quarantined himself, making him the country’s last top political figure hit by the deadly virus.
Addressing Twitter, Pakistan’s leader Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said that this afternoon he had a mild fever and immediately quarantined himself at home.
“I have now tested positive for Covid-19. By the grace of Allah, I feel strong and energetic. I will continue to perform my duties from home. Please keep me in your prayers” , he said in a tweet.
Mr. Qureshi is the highest government official to be infected with the virus.
He is the vice president of the Pakistani government Tehreek-e-Insaf and considered the number two in government after Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Several Pakistani legislators have contracted the deadly virus and some of them have also died.
In June, National Assembly member Munir Khan Orakzai died a few days after recovering from the coronavirus.
Eight members of the Khber Pakhunkhwa Assembly were infected with the coronavirus.
The president of the National Assembly, Asad Qaiser, was also infected but recovered.
The coronavirus count in Pakistan has crossed the 221,000 mark with more than 4,500 deaths.
