Over 141 missing or dead due to severe flooding in China, 38 million affected

The headquarters raised the level of response to China’s floods from level III to level II, the second highest level.

Beijing:

More than 140 people have died or disappeared due to severe flooding in several Chinese regions that affected nearly 38 million people, authorities in Beijing said on Sunday.

“As of July 12, 37.9 million people have been affected by the floods in 27 regions, including the provinces of Jiangxi, Anhui, Hubei and Hunan. 141 people have died or are missing and 2.25 million people have been evacuated , “read a statement from the country’s national headquarters for flood control and drought relief.

Earlier in the day, headquarters raised the country’s flood response level from Level III to Level II, the second highest level. Many rivers, including the Yangtze, have swelled after weeks of torrential rain.

The floods destroyed more than 28,000 buildings and the cost of the damage was estimated at 82.2 billion yuan (11.7 billion US dollars).

Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the citizens of the country to take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
