The flood situation in Assam remained grim as another person died and 26.38 lakh people were affected on Saturday in 27 of the state’s 33 districts, according to a government report.
With the death of one person in Morigaon district, the number of floods and landslides this year has risen to 123.
While 97 people have died in flood-related incidents, 26 have been killed in landslides, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.
ASDMA said the number of people affected by the flood has fallen by more than 1.6 lakh since Friday, while that in the district has increased by one.
Goalpara remained the worst affected district with 4.7 lakh of people affected by the flood, followed by Barpeta (4.24 lakh) and Morigaon (3.75 lakh), according to the statement.
The Brahmaputra flows over the danger mark in the towns of Guwahati, Tezpur, Dhubri and Goalpara. Its tributaries such as Dhansiri, Jia Bharali, Kopili, Beki and Sankosh in Golokoganj in Dhubri also flow above danger levels in various places.
Roads, bridges, culverts and many other infrastructure were damaged in various places in the districts of Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Dhubri, Chirang, Nagaon, Jorhat, Barpeta and Majuli.
Massive erosions were observed in various places in Biswanath, South Salmara, Chirang and Majuli districts, ASDMA said.
District governments operate 564 relief camps and distribution centers in 19 districts, where 47,772 people have sought refuge.
The ASDMA bulletin says the floods have so far claimed the lives of 127 animals of different species, while 157 others have been rescued in Kaziranga National Park.
Flooded districts are Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Darrang, Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Morighataon, Nagaon, Golhataghatiariahideoide, , West Karbi Anglong and Cachar.
