New Delhi:
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) set up a high-level committee of three on Thursday to investigate the circumstances that led to the eruption accident in Baghjan in Assam.
The committee was invited to submit its report within one month.
The three-member committee composed of SCL Das, DG of the Hydrocarbons Branch, BC Bora, former president of CGSB and TK Sengupta, former director of CGSB, will identify the shortcomings in the following protocols and procedures that led to the ‘accident.
The committee will also recommend short and long-term measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, including the identification of any deficiencies in existing standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Earlier in the day, the military sealed off the area as the fire continued to rage at the Oil India Limited (OIL) gas well in Baghjan in the Tinsukia district.
Assam Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary had already visited Baghjan. He said 7,000 people were affected by the incident.
“I had a meeting with officials from Oil India, the CGSB and the district administration. 7,000 people were affected. The damage will be assessed and compensation will be paid,” said Mr. Patowary.
On June 10, two people died in the massive fire at the accident site.
