New Delhi:
The detention of Saifuddin Soz, a senior political official in Jammu and Kashmir, reached the Supreme Court, which sent an opinion to the Center and to the administration of the Union territory concerning his release. This 82-year-old man has been under house arrest since August, when the Center ended the special status of Jammu and Kashmir granted by the Constitution and divided it into two Union territories.
Comparing Mr. Soz’s wife, who had filed an appeal against his arrest, Congress veteran Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that house arrest is illegal and was carried out without a single document.
“Mr. Soz is a peaceful and law-abiding Indian citizen. He has not committed any breach of the peace. Holding him in detention for a long time constitutes a violation of his right to life and personal liberty,” said said Mr. Singhvi.
Mr. Soz has been under arrest since August 5, 2019, read the petition filed by his wife. He also stated that Mr. Soz was denied his right to make a claim against his arrest.
The higher court denied the request to resume the case next week. The court said it would deal with the case during the second week of July.
