The northeast has the potential to become the engine of India’s growth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today, noting that peace is being established across the region.
He made the remarks during the cornerstone laying ceremony for the Manipur Water Supply Project by Video Link.
As blockades have become part of Manipur’s history, the era of decades of violence in Assam has come to an end. In Tripura and Mizoram too, young people have abandoned the path of violence and the refugees of Bru-Reang are now heading for a better life, Prime Minister Modi said in his speech.
The Prime Minister noted that the government is making constant efforts to improve connectivity in the northeast region, whether it is its highways, the laying of railroads or the modernization of airports.
The foundation stone program, the prime minister said, is an example of how even during the crisis triggered by the novel coronavirus, the country has not stopped functioning.
Until such time as a vaccine is developed, we must fight the coronavirus vigorously and the development work should also be continued vigorously, he said.
An externally funded project, the Manipur Water Supply Project was designed to provide Household Fresh Water Connections (FHTC) to the remaining households in the Grand Imphal planning area and to 1,731 rural dwellings covering 2 , 80,756 households in the 16 districts of Manipur.
The project expenditure is Rs 3,054.58 crore, with a loan component funded by the new development bank.
