The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has asked state governments to take measures that included complying with building orders to make future buildings earthquake-resistant and to avoid adding vulnerable buildings.
He suggested that they identify vulnerable structures, especially the lifeline buildings, and renovate them. Private buildings should also be modernized gradually.
The NDMA advised state governments to conduct regular simulation exercises and to go out with SoPs for an immediate response after an earthquake.
Undertake public awareness programs regarding “do’s and don’ts” during an earthquake, he said.
The meeting, convened to discuss various mitigation and preparedness measures to reduce the risk of earthquake in the Delhi-RCN region, was attended by voice conferences by members of NDMA, the director general of the National Disaster Response Force and senior officers from Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
