Patna:
A highly anticipated virtual rally by Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar next week where he was due to sound the bugle for assembly polls has been postponed for the time being due to raging Covid-19 issues and flooding in the state, a JD (U) leader said in Patna on Friday.
In a statement, the chairman of the Janata Dal (US) state unit, Vashishtha Narayan Singh, said the rally, scheduled for August 7, had been postponed “due to the coronavirus pandemic and floods”.
Nearly four million people in northern Bihar have been affected by flooding caused by rising rivers from Nepal.
The new coronavirus has also torn the state apart with the number of positive cases affecting nearly 50,000, while 285 patients have died from the virus.
A new date for the virtual rally will be decided in due course, the statement added.
Senior party leaders, whose chief minister is the national president, had been busy holding orientation workshops for grassroots workers through video conferences for the past two weeks.
The JD (U) asked its workers to provide assistance to the victims of the 14 districts affected by the flood.
The BJP shares power with the JD (U) in the state, and the combine had been criticized by the opposition for handling the election campaign at a time when the state was rocked by its worst peak in COVID 19 cases, which required the re-imposition of the lockdown.
Parties such as Congress and the RJD have also insisted that either the Assembly ballot, scheduled for October-November, be postponed or that the “traditional” campaign mode be allowed, as the digital election puts them at a disadvantage.
