Assam activist Akhil Gogoi arrested in case of CAA protests

Guwahati:

A National Investigation Agency or NIA court ordered the Guwahati central prison authorities to immediately organize a COVID-19 test for Assam activist Akhil Gogoi and two of his assistants.

They have been detained at Guwahati Central Prison for the past few months in connection with protests against the Citizenship Law (Amendment).

The NIA’s interim court order came after Mr. Gogoi’s lawyers addressed the court with a petition requesting immediate tests. They said that the health of Mr. Gogoi and his collaborators was becoming so bad that they could not even appear for a hearing by videoconference.

The petition indicates that Mr. Gogoi and his two aides suffer from fever, cough and body pain, which are considered symptoms of COVID-19.

Guwahati Central Prison has reported at least two cases of COVID-19.

Gogoi’s wife Geetashree Tamuly also raised the issue on social media two days ago.

The court ordered the prison authorities to obtain medical care for the three detainees and also to send a report on their state of health.
