New York police said one officer was shot and stabbed in the Brooklyn neighborhood shortly before midnight Wednesday, but it was unclear whether the attack was linked to mass protests against the death of an unarmed black man.
The names and conditions of the police were not released, but the media said the injuries were not fatal.
The two were injured near Church and Flatbush avenues in Brooklyn when a suspect approached an officer and attacked.
The New York Post said the suspect was also shot dead. A police spokesman told Reuters that the police were taken to the Kings County hospital. An arrest was made at the scene.
The incident occurred amid mass protests and some riots in New York City about the death in Minneapolis of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, while in the care of white police.
According to media reports, a third officer was injured in the hand and the city’s mayor, Bill de Blasio, went to the hospital.
