Kathmandu:
The Nepalese opposition castigated Tuesday the “immature” foreign policy of the government of KP Oli, claiming that it hinders the country’s relations with its neighbors.
Prime Minister Oli has faced intense criticism since his government’s decision to update the country’s political map by incorporating three strategically key Indian territories – Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura – last month.
KP Oli, known for his pro-Chinese tendencies, is also under pressure from his own party leaders to resign both as Prime Minister and as party chairman for his anti-Indian comments.
Last week, the executive chairman of the Nepalese Communist Party (NCP), Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda”, called for the resignation of KP Oli, saying his recent remarks that India was plotting to remove him were “neither politically correct or diplomatically appropriate “.
A meeting of opposition parties concluded on Tuesday that the Oli government had pursued a very unbalanced and irresponsible foreign policy, which hampered Nepal’s relations with its neighbors, the Kathmandu Post reported.
Due to the immature conduct of foreign policy, relations with neighbors have deteriorated and become very complex, according to leaders of the Nepalese Congress (NC) and the Janta Samajbadi Party (JSP).
“The meeting concluded that Nepal faces difficulties while maintaining good relations with its neighbors due to the government’s immature foreign policy,” said CN vice president Bimalendra Nidhi, without naming India .
Interestingly, the NC and JSP supported the Oli government’s constitutional amendment bill to redraw the new political map of Nepal last month.
The move sparked a feud between India and Nepal, with New Delhi calling the “artificial expansion” of Kathmandu’s land claims “untenable”.
The meeting also discussed the current political situation, the government’s decision to prorogue the House, its conduct in foreign policy and its mismanagement of the coronavirus pandemic, said Mr. Nidhi.
As pressure from his own party leaders increased, KP Oli prorogued the two houses of parliament last Thursday.
The move will prevent the Prachanda faction, backed by senior leaders and former prime ministers Madhav Nepal and Jhalanath Khanal, from voting against him.
