The brother of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, leader of the opposition, the Pakistan-Nawaz Muslim League (PML-N), tested positive for coronavirus, becoming the last Pakistani politician to be infected with the deadly virus on the day the number of COVID-19 cases in the country reached 119,536.
PML-N leader Ataullah Tarar confirmed on Thursday that 68-year-old Shehbaz Sharif had been infected with the virus. He said Shehbaz Sharif contracted the virus because he was scheduled to appear before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on June 9 in a money laundering case.
“The NAB has been informed on several occasions in writing that Shehbaz Sharif is suffering from cancer and compared to other people, his immune system is weak,” said Tarar.
He said Shehbaz Sharif was already in quarantine due to the threat of the virus and had to leave his home to report to NAB.
“Imran Niazi (Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan) and NAB will be responsible if something happens to Shehbaz Sharif,” he said.
Earlier in a statement submitted to NAB, Shehbaz Sharif, who is Nawaz Sharif’s younger brother, said: “It has been widely reported in the media that some NAB officials have tested positive for COVID-19. Please appreciate (that) I am a cancer survivor and 69 years old. I was advised to have limited exposure due to the particular context of low immunity. “
Shehbaz Sharif added to the list of the country’s main leaders who contracted the virus, including former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and the reigning Minister of Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmad.
At least four legislators, including a provincial minister, have died from a coronavirus in Pakistan.
The National Health Ministry said that 5,834 new cases have been reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 119,536.
The total number of deaths has reached 2,356 after the death of 101 patients in the past 24 hours.
