Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, currently in London for treatment, told a court here on Tuesday that he was unable to return to the country because his doctors had told him not to go out as he might contract due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The 70-year-old three-time prime minister is currently in London for treatment after being diagnosed with an immune system disorder.
He left for the UK in November last year after the High Court in Lahore granted him four-week leave to travel abroad for treatment.
In his latest medical report, which he submitted to the Lahore High Court (LHC) through his lawyer Amjad Pervaiz, doctors recommended that he avoid going out because of the coronavirus.
Sharif said he had low platelet counts, diabetes, heart, kidney and blood pressure issues.
“His heart is not getting an adequate supply of blood,” the report says and adds that he can contract COVID-19 if he goes out or comes back, which can prove fatal to his life.
Sharif submitted his medical report to the LHC as part of his permission to travel abroad for treatment.
Her daughter Maryam Nawaz had said her father was a high-risk patient and therefore his heart catheterization / coronary intervention was postponed due to COVID-19.
Earlier this month, a Pakistani anti-corruption court gave Sharif one last chance to appear before it on August 17 in a corruption case, failing which he could be convicted.
In the Toshakhana case, the liability court issued non-binding arrest warrants against Sharif.
Sharif is accused of taking cars from Toshakhana by paying 15% of the price of these vehicles.
Sharif left for London in November after the Lahore High Court granted him four weeks’ permission to go abroad for treatment.
He had submitted to the court an undertaking to return to Pakistan citing his experience of confrontation with the law and the justice within four weeks or as soon as he is declared in good health and fit to travel by doctors.
He was also released on bail in the Al-Azizia Mills corruption case in which he was serving a seven-year sentence in Kot Lakhpat prison and in a money laundering case to facilitate his trip to the foreign.
Sharif was diagnosed with “complicated coronary artery disease / ischemic heart disease”.
The country’s anti-corruption body last month filed a corruption complaint against Sharif, the owner of the Jang / Geo media group, Mir Shakilur Rahman, and two others in a land case in the Lahore Liability Court. .
According to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Sharif, in 1986, when he was Chief Minister of Punjab, allocated 54 kanal lands in Lahore to Mir Shakilur Rehman in violation of the rules. Rahman is in pre-trial detention after his arrest by the NAB on March 12.
As Sharif did not respond to any of the summons and questions from the NAB, his arrest warrants had already been issued and the office announced that it had moved the accountability court to declare him a proclaimed offender.
