Kochi:
A special tribunal of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Kochi sent the accused Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair to the NIA on Monday for eight days until July 21 in the gold smuggling case.
The NIA requested 10-day detention, but judge P. Krishna Kumar only allowed eight days.
The agency informed the court that the accused had falsified the seal and emblem of the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to commit the crime.
“The documents were falsified by Faisal Fareed to ensure diplomatic protection of luggage. The tariff is the third accused in the case. The gold smuggled into Kerala was not used for jewelry but for terrorist activities. The accused smuggled the gold twice in 2019, in two lots – 18 kg and 9 kg, “the NIA told the court.
“Certain recoveries were made on the basis of their confessions and a detailed analysis of these objects in presence was of the utmost necessity. Numerous documents making it possible to establish the limits of the legal prescriptions had already been obtained. Consequently, the interrogating the detainees, which was inevitable, would reveal more decisive aspects, “he said.
The NIA has asked the court to authorize proceedings for the publication of a Blue Corner notice from Interpol (to gather information about the suspects) against Fareed, who is in Dubai.
In addition, NIA has applied to the court to change its name and address. Earlier, the third accused in the case was identified as Fazil Fareed, from Ernakulam.
However, the NIA requested that the same be changed for Fareed, originally from Kodungallur in the Thrissur district, and the court granted it.
