Mumbai:
Nagaland police have set up the largest quarantine center in the northeast state run by police personnel, a senior official said on Sunday.
The 1,027-bed center in Ganeshpur was set up to increase the state government’s efforts to check for coronaviruses, said Nagaland DGP John Longkumer.
A team of police officers visited the special economic zone of Ganeshnagar under the Dhansiripar division in Dimapur on May 20 to assess, plan, organize and define the arrangements for setting up the installation, which was set up in fifteen days, he said.
Work has started on the institutional quarantine of stranded returnees from other states, Nagaland ADGP (Admin) Sandeep Tamgadge police told PTI.
DIG (Training) Aotemsu led the team of officers responsible for accommodation, power supply, sanitation, water supply, office and control room, security, logistics, catering and transportation, said Tamgadge.
“Personal comfort and the risk of inevitable exposure to the coronavirus have taken precedence and all police personnel have prepared the quarantine center in record time,” said the IPS officer.
A total of 640 police officers, including officers, were on the ground when the construction process for the center began, said Mr. Tamgadge.
The first batch of 509 returnees from Bangalore, including 383 men and 126 women, arrived at the quarantine center on June 5, followed by returnees from Punjab, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
The Ganeshnagar center is the largest in Nagaland to be built and run by the police for residents of the state through the initiative of the Community Police Service (PSC), he said.
A police medical team including doctors, nurses and other health workers is stationed in the facility and deals with routine quarantine and other medical emergencies.
The team was also responsible for sample collection and swab testing and operates the TrueNat system, approved by the Indian Council for Medical Research, to perform coronavirus tests.
“The Nagaland police have always overcome challenges and during the unprecedented situation of coronaviruses, we have accomplished our tasks going beyond the normal policing task and have not only imposed the lock but also secured the various state quarantine centers, “said John Longkumer.
“We resurrected an old abandoned industrial complex by cleaning up a thick jungle, installing water pipes, bathrooms, providing electricity and even digging a 1.25-liter pond to renew supply in water, “said the Nagaland police chief.
The Nagaland police manage the quarantined people, their tests, their food, their accommodation and their medical facilities. “We thank the state government and civil society for helping us in this endeavor and for trusting us in our capabilities,” he said.
