Monsoon 2020: Goa and parts of the Konkan coast receive heavy rain

New Delhi:

The monsoon has arrived in Goa and on the Konkan coast in Maharashtra, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) announced today. Rain hit coastal areas of the state this morning. The IMD also warned of heavy rains in Goa on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“The southwest monsoon has arrived in Maharashtra. The starting line is through Harnai, Solapur, Ramagundum (Telangana) and Jagdalpur (Chhattisgarh),” K Hosalikar, deputy managing director of IMD Mumbai, told Press Trust of India.

“Conditions are favorable for further advances in Maharashtra in the next 48 hours. Warnings of heavy rain have been issued,” said Hosalikar.

The monsoon also arrived in Odisha today. Coastal districts of the state received heavy rainfall. Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura and Assam also received heavy rains.

In recent days, several regions of the country have received showers before the monsoon, including Mumbai and its suburbs. The meteorological office said that in the coming days, the monsoon would likely cover most parts of Maharashtra, Telangana and northeast India. The monsoon is also expected to reach parts of Chhattisgarh and West Bengal.

The Mumbai civic body has asked people to take precautions against monsoon-related illnesses in addition to COVID-19 infections.

Good news for the country, IMD, in its long-term forecast, said the country will receive heavy monsoon rains this year. Between June and September, precipitation is expected to be 100%, the report said.
