The India-made Godavari-class frigates of the Indian Navy, one of which has been sunk today, first entered service in the Indian Navy in 1983. The frigates of this class, three of which were built, had a significant native warship design and combined, Russian and Western weapon systems.
Two of the class ships, the lead frigate, Godavari and the second in the class, Ganga, were decommissioned in 2015 and 2018 respectively. It is believed that one of these two ships was sunk during these exercises.
On Thursday, Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh reviewed the operational readiness and combat readiness of the main Indian Navy fighters, many of whom are now deployed in naval exercises. This includes the aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya, and its battle group which includes destroyers, frigates and other warships. INS Chennai, one of the Navy’s most advanced destroyers, also tested a BrahMos anti-ship missile during these exercises.
The Navy also yesterday inducted a new anti-submarine corvette, INS Kavaratti, at the Visakhapatnam shipyard. The Kavaratti is the last of four native anti-submarine corvettes of this class built for the Indian Navy. The navy says the Kavaratti “can rightly be considered one of the most powerful anti-submarine warships ever built in India.”
