Washington:
Microsoft has identified an alleged hacking group that targeted a company working with Democrat Joe Biden as the same Russian-backed unit accused by the US government of entering the campaign of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, according to two sources informed of the Microsoft analysis.
The hack attempts have targeted staff at Washington-based SKDKnickerbocker, a campaign strategy and communications firm working with 2020 presidential hopeful Biden and other leading Democrats, in the past two months, the sources said.
SKDK Vice President Hilary Rosen declined to comment. The Biden campaign said it was aware that Microsoft said a foreign player attempted unsuccessfully to access “non-campaign email accounts of people affiliated with the campaign.” Microsoft, which shared with SKDK its assessment that Russian hackers have targeted the company, declined to comment.
The Russian hacking group, which many cyber researchers refer to as “Fancy Bear,” is controlled by the Russian military intelligence agency, according to reports from the U.S. intelligence community released after the 2016 election.
A person familiar with SKDK’s response to the attempts said the hackers failed to gain access to the company’s networks. “They are well defended, so there was no breach,” the person said.
Microsoft believes Fancy Bear is behind the attacks based on an analysis of the group’s hacking techniques and network infrastructure, one of the sources said.
