New Delhi:
Police and protesters gathered to condemn the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody after being trapped by a white officer, which sparked protests across the United States.
The gesture, which was widely shared on social networks, shows several senior Miami police officers kneeling for a moment in solidarity with the protesters. People on social media described the police move as a step in the wrong direction.
The demonstration across the United States erupted after a video showing a Minneapolis police officer kneeling on George Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes.
Peaceful and violent demonstrations shook the country for almost a week.
The incident left the nation somewhat politically and racially divided in the run-up to the US presidential election and the coronavirus pandemic that left millions of unemployed.
As the rally escalated, Washington DC mayor Muriel Bowser imposed a citywide curfew on Monday. Ms. Browner said she was activating the DC National Guard to support the Metropolitan Police Department.
President Donald Trump was also transported to an underground bunker for about an hour on Sunday as violent protests raged in Washington DC, including outside the White House and in American cities.
The Trump administration called the instigators of the violence “national terrorists”.
Violent clashes have broken out on several occasions in a small park next to the White House, with authorities using tear gas, pepper spray and flash grenades to disperse crowds that have started several large fires and damaged property.
Four Minneapolis police officers were dismissed for their involvement in the death of Floyd.
