Manipur has faced numerous cases where police officers have been found involved in drug trafficking.

The government of Manipur had to withdraw the Medal of Bravery bestowed on one of its police officers on Manipur Patriot Day after it was revealed that he was allegedly involved in a drug trafficking case in 2013 .

The government further ordered an investigation to verify the selection process that recommended his name for the honor.

Manipur Police Sub-Inspector Bheishamayum Debson Singh received the Bravery Award.

His name was on the list of laureates announced by Governor Najma Heptulla. A total of 13 police officers were selected for the Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Bravery and the Chief Minister’s Police Medal for their dedication to duty.

The awards were presented on August 13, which is celebrated as Manipur Patriot Day.

The Manipur Student Union (AMSU), through a press release, alleged that the accused cop was arrested along with a team of 11 members of the Manipur Police Commandos for drug trafficking from a worth over Rs 3.64 crore in 2013.

AMSU had questioned the government on its procedure for selecting the Bravery Awards.

Taking note of the allegations, the state government has now suspended the policeman and people who recommended his name, government sources added.

A committee headed by Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) K Radhashyam will fully investigate the matter, Manipur police sources added.
