Mumbai:

A 58-year-old man died after an electric pole fell on him in Alibaug, Maharashtra, when the monstrous winds of Cyclone Nisarga hit the coastal state today.

Victim Dashrath Babu Waghmare was rushing home when the utility pole fell on him. He died soon after. The incident occurred in the village of Umate at 1:30 p.m., shortly after the severe cyclone storm hit the state.

Heavy rain and strong winds hit Maharashtra as severe cyclone Nisarga made landfall at Alibaug near Mumbai at 1 p.m. this afternoon. Trees swayed, several electric poles fell, and some trees were also uprooted during this popular getaway, about 100 km from Mumbai, the state capital.

An important part of colonial history, Alibaug, known for its sandy beaches, reported a wind speed of 93 km / h this afternoon. The coastal town is home to many celebrity bungalows in addition to forts and temples and began to prepare for the severe storm last night, evacuating residents from the coast.

The rain stopped and the wind speed decreased considerably after a few hours and there was no significant damage in Mumbai and elsewhere, except the loss of the canopy.

The movement of people has been restricted in public places in Mumbai affected by coronaviruses such as beaches, parks and walks along the coast until tomorrow afternoon. Air operations, suspended at the city’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, have also resumed.

Over 19,000 people across the state have been placed in safety.

It was the second cyclone to hit India in two weeks, after Cyclone Amphan, and the first to hit Mumbai in more than 100 years.
