A man working on a 15-year-old girl’s family farm in Barmer, Rajasthan was arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping her.
The girl had accused two unknown men of raping her earlier Tuesday in the area of Barmer Sheo police station, but police officer Vikram Sandoo said the primary investigation found only the accused arrested , known to the girl, was involved in the crime.
“The matter, however, is being investigated further to establish more facts,” he said.
Rajasthan BJP chairman Satish Poonia, meanwhile, met with the girl’s family and accused the Ashok Gehlot government of failing to control crime against women and children in the state.
Police Superintendent Barmer Anand Sharma said the accused, identified as Gangaram, 24, was placed under arrest on Thursday.
“The accused was held last night for questioning on the basis of suspicion and it became clear during questioning that he had raped the young girl,” police said.
Mr Sandoo said that the accused worked as a laborer in the agricultural field of the grandfather of a daughter.
“They knew each other well,” he said.
The police complaint was registered against unidentified people as the girl said she did not know the men who raped her.
The alleged rape took place in the Sheo Police Station area on Tuesday evening, as the girl’s family members went to vote in the panchayat elections, they said.
The girl alleged that two men took her by bicycle to a secluded location and raped her. They also clicked on photos of the act, she said.
“A case has been registered against unidentified persons under the relevant articles of the IPC, the POCSO law and the IT law on the basis of a complaint lodged by the family members of the victim,” said said the policeman.
The president of the Rajasthan State Commission for the Protection of the Rights of the Child, Sangeeta Beniwal, meanwhile went to the district hospital to meet the girl.
Mr Poonia, meanwhile, has met with the girl’s family members and demanded swift action in the case.
He said the crime rate has increased in the state and cases of crime against women are on the rise under Congress.
“The Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, has failed to keep law and order under control. Crimes against women are on the rise and this situation is more dangerous than the corona pandemic,” he said. .
Mr Poonia said Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi are also expected to visit Rajasthan, referring to their visit to the Hathras of Uttar Pradesh to meet the family of a 20-year-old woman who was raped and died of her injuries.
