New Delhi:
A book will document the journey of 25 exceptionally brave girls who fought oppression and challenged regressive social norms for their right to education, publishers announced before Malala Day.
HarperCollins India acquired the rights to the anthology compiled by Malala Fund and which will be released in 2021.
July 12, which is also Malala’s birthday, was declared by the UN Malala Day in honor of the young activist.
Edited by Tess Thomas, editor-in-chief of Assembly, the Malala Fund’s digital publication and newsletter, the book will feature girls of school age speaking out, tackling local issues in their communities and showing the next generation they can do the same.
“The Malala Fund created Assembly, our digital publication and newsletter, to help more girls tell their stories, just like Malala Yousafzai. This printed anthology will feature personal essays by girls from around the world on their struggle for freedom. ‘education and equality,’ said Thomas.
The book does not have a title yet.
Krishan Chopra, publisher at HarperCollins, said the book was of enormous relevance.
“Due to the fallout from COVID-19, the dropout rate for girls is expected to increase and the irony is that in universities they are either equal or ahead of boys when they have enough opportunities. So we’re delighted to announce this anthology, “he said.
Book editor Ananya Borgohain added: “Due to COVID-19 and the lockout, many people in India have lost their jobs, making it difficult, especially for low-income households, to support themselves. for the education of their children.
“It is important that people know the stories that can give them not only hope but also crucial information on access to education. This is what this book will do.”
