Rennes, France:
Dozens of firefighters fought a major fire inside a cathedral in Nantes, western France on Saturday, emergency services said.
Firefighters were alerted just before 8:00 a.m. (06:00 GMT) of the fire at Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul cathedral, whose construction began in the 15th century, said the emergency operations center.
He said the “major fire” was still progressing and that 60 firefighters had been dispatched to the scene.
The Gothic structure was last hit by fire in 1972. It took more than 13 years to repair its roof.
Another religious building in Nantes – the Saint-Donatien and Saint-Rogatien basilica – was hit by a fire in 2015 which destroyed three-quarters of its roof.
In April of last year, a fire ravaged Notre-Dame Cathedral in the 13th century in Paris, causing its bell tower to collapse and sending puffed smoke containing toxic molten lead into the air. The structure will take years to repair.
