Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh:
A lawsuit has been filed against Madhya Pradesh congressman Shashank Bhargava for allegedly making a disparaging remark against a female Union minister during a demonstration against rising fuel prices, police said on Friday.
Bhargava made the remarks at a bicycle rally in Vidisha on Thursday, police said.
The controversial statement angered BJP leaders in power in the state, the president of the Vidisha Civic Corps staging a demonstration against Shashank Bhargava and accusing him of having an “anti-women” mentality.
The BJP filed a complaint against Mr. Bhargava, who represents the seat of the Vidisha Assembly.
“An FIR has been registered against Shashank Bhargava under the relevant articles of the Indian Penal Code for disobedience of an official’s order and sexual harassment and punishment for sexual harassment,” said Virendra Jha, head of the Kotwali police station.
At the same time, President of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Rekha Sharma said that a response will be requested from the legislator for this remark.
Reacting to this comment, senior BJP official and former Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia tweeted on Friday, “Yatra Naryastu Pujyante, Ramante Tatra Devta (The gods reside where women are worshiped). But the way our leaders in Congress speak out against women is highly condemnable. “
