Leading clinical researcher Gagandeep Kang leaves Institute of Translation and Health Sciences

Gagandeep Kang was also elected a member of the American Academy of Microbiology.

Gagandeep Kang, a renowned clinical scientist and executive director of the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI), said on Monday that she had resigned from her job for personal reasons.

Gagandeep Kang, known for her interdisciplinary research on the transmission, development and prevention of infections and their sequelae in children in India, is the first Indian woman to be inducted into the Royal Society in London.

She is also associated with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness, a global consortium involved in the facilitation of candidate vaccines for the new coronavirus and other infectious diseases.

“Yes, I am leaving THSTI as director, but I hope to continue my association with faculty and science. The reason is to return to my family and to CMC (Christian Medical College) Vellore because I was on sabbatical at go from there, “Gagandeep Kang said in an email response to PTI.

Before joining THSTI in August 2016, Gagandeep Kang was a professor at the Christian Medical College in Vellore. His term was due to expire next year.

A well-known name in the fields of epidemiology and vaccinology, it has played a decisive role in the creation of national rotavirus and typhoid surveillance networks.

It also created laboratories to support vaccine trials and conducted phase 1-3 clinical trials of vaccines, a holistic approach that supported two prequalified World Health Organization (WHO) vaccines, manufactured by two Indian companies.

Gagandeep Kang was also elected a member of the American Academy of Microbiology. In 2016, she also received the Infosys prize in life sciences.
