New Delhi:
Prime Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal today asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and ask the UGC (University Grants Commission) and the Department of Human Resources to cancel the final exams for students from the University of Delhi and other central universities in the country in light of the COVID-19 crisis.
Kejriwal, who wrote to the Prime Minister, said: “For the sake of our young people, I urge the Prime Minister to intervene personally and cancel the final exams of the AU and other government universities central and to save the future. “
In his letter, the chief minister urged the center and the UGC to modify the guidelines in the general interest of students and save their future by canceling the exams for the last semester.
“If institutes like IIT and NLU have already awarded degrees to their students on the basis of an internal assessment, then why can’t other universities do the same?” asked the chief minister.
“World universities have also awarded degrees on the basis of an internal assessment during a pandemic,” he said.

Hours before his call, Delhi’s deputy chief minister, Manish Sisodia, said that the final exams at all state universities had been canceled.
“Since no study has taken place this semester. It has not been possible to take exams. We therefore asked the universities to cancel the exams and promote the students on the basis of previous results or a progressive assessment method, “said Sisodia, also Delhi’s Minister of Education. was quoted by the PTI news agency.
Universities under the Delhi government include Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi Technological University, Ambedkar University and Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women.
Central Delhi universities include Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia.
Central approval is required to cancel exams at these institutions.
The conduct of last year’s exams during the coronavirus epidemic has been controversial, with several opposition leaders, like Rahul Gandhi of Congress, against holding them this year.
The UGC has published revised guidelines and it has been suggested that exams can be held and completed by September, either in the classroom or online.
Concerns about final year exams arise in a disturbing context of COVID-19 cases across the country; more than 8.2 lakh cases have been detected to date, with more than 20,000 new cases every day since July 3.
Delhi is the third most affected region in the country, with nearly 1.10 cases of lakh and 3,300 deaths.
