Pune / Mumbai:
An orange alert was issued for the districts of Kolhapur and Satara in western Maharashtra and for the coastal areas for August 18-19 with the forecast of heavy to very heavy rains in isolated places of the ghat areas, said Monday the Met Department.
A forecast of light to moderate rains is made for Pune and adjacent areas of the district for the next two days, an official said.
By issuing an orange alert, the Met Department predicted heavy to very heavy precipitation in isolated places in coastal areas of the state on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“The southwest monsoon would remain active over Maharashtra for the next 4 to 5 days, causing heavy downpours,” an official said in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, water levels in the Krishna, Warna and Koyna rivers in Sangli district have risen due to the continued rains, officials said, adding residents have been put on alert.
Massive flooding caused large-scale damage to Sangli and Kolhapur districts last year during the monsoon.
“Light to moderate rains are expected to occur in Pune and adjacent areas on Tuesday and Wednesday. Rainy activity in the district will increase as moderate rains are expected on Thursday and Friday,” an Indian Meteorological Department official told Pune. (IMD).
In Sangli district, very light to light rains are forecast for the next two to three days.
Meanwhile, the city of Pune has experienced low rainfall over the past 24 hours.

In the city of Pune, collective water storage has increased to 25.82 TMC (one thousand million cubic feet), or 88.57% of their total capacity.
“The Panshet dam being filled to its capacity, the water will be released at the rate of 2,000 cusecs,” said a district official.
In the districts of Sangli and Kolhapur, water is released from the dams of Koyna, Warna, Chandoli and Radhanagari.
“Water is currently being released from the Almatti dam (in northern Karnataka) at the rate of 2.5 lakh cusecs,” an official said.
The water level of the Krishna River flowing through Sangli District was 35.4 feet while the water level of the Panchaganga River at Rajaram Dam in Kolhapur District was 38.9 feet.
