2020 US election: Presidential candidate Joe Biden has chosen Kamala Harris as vice president.
Hours after Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden made history by choosing Indian-born Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate, Ms Harris’s sister tweeted a moving video featuring the woman “who made it all possible ”- their mother.
Ms Harris is now the first woman of Asian and American descent and the first black woman to be selected as a major party running mate.
“You can’t know who Kamala Harris is without knowing who our mother was. She misses her terribly, but know that she and her ancestors are smiling today. # BidenHarris2020,” Maya Harris tweeted as the world scoured the news identification of the 55-year-old daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants.

Ms. Harris is the first South Asian-American woman and the second black woman in history to serve in the United States Senate, reports CNBS. She is only the fourth woman in US history to be chosen for one of the presidential tickets.
To mark the nomination, Ms Harris’ sister shared a collage of photos of the California senator over the years with one of her speeches showcasing her mother’s legacy as a strong woman from Chennai who immigrated to America for study science.
The speech, a version of many speeches Ms. Harris made during her presidential campaign that ended last December, is also indicative of the ethnically diverse America that the Democratic Party hopes to defend amid widespread protests against nationwide police brutality against minorities, most recently since the death of a black man, George Floyd, in May.
“Joe Biden here. Great news: I picked Kamala Harris as my running mate,” Biden wrote in an email to supporters. “Together, with you, we will beat Trump.”
According to reports, the US presidential candidate chose his former rival as his vice presidential candidate after lengthy discussions with many friends, including former President Barack Obama.
Reactions from celebrities, including Indo-American actors, to his run for vice-president lit social media Tuesday after Joe Biden’s announcement, made in a text and a tweet.
