Kanpur:
An investigation was ordered by the police chief for the city of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh after a team of cops failed to prevent the kidnappers of a 29-year-old man from escaping with a ransom of 30 lakh rupees. The 29-year-old is still being held by kidnappers, the family said.
The investigation was ordered after family members of the man organized a two-hour sit-in demonstration on Tuesday outside the office of Kanpur police chief Dinesh Kumar P. The man, who works in a pathology laboratory in Kanpur, was reportedly kidnapped for ransom on June 22.
In their interview with the journalists, the family said that the cops from the Kanpur police station in Barra asked them to make arrangements for 30 lakh rupees and to give the money to the men who had made more than 15 calls to the family since the day of the abduction. They demanded a ransom and threatened to kill the man if the money was not paid.
The family was asked to pay the ransom on Monday. They told the media that officers from Barpur Police Station in Kanpur assured them that they would have a large presence at the site where the money would be delivered and that they would arrest the kidnappers as soon as they took the ransom. .
On Monday, however, things did not go as planned.
“We had previously approached Aparna Gupta, an IPS officer in charge of the area, and asked her to follow up on the bag with the ransom money. She assured us that all arrangements would be made,” said one sister. distraught. of man.
“But they made us pay the money and my brother was not released either. The police continued to say that we will recover the money even if it was returned. But the first priority is to recover your family member. A police team was with us at all times. The alleged kidnappers continued to talk to my father for 30 minutes on the phone before the ransom was taken. He forced my father to throw the bag away. “Money from the top of a flyover on a road below. Not planned all that?”, she asked.
The family also told the media that they belonged to a lower middle class and had to sell their house and their jewelry to organize the money.
“The allegations against the police are false. Our teams are working on this file and we hope to resolve it quickly. I have my sympathy for the family. Whenever they met me, I also explained all the details of the file to them and We were taking nothing away from the family. This matter is a priority for us, “said Aparna Gupta, the family-appointed IPS officer during their demonstration on Tuesday.
Following outrage over the incident, the Kanpur police chief released a statement late evening saying action would be taken against those found at fault.
“I have taken note of the incident. I am talking to the family. If someone has made a mistake on our side, we will punish them. If money has been exchanged, this money will be recovered for sure” said Dinesh Kumar P.
The incident also sparked criticism from the opposition parties of the UP. Former chief minister and party leader Samajwadi Akhilesh Yadav tweeted: “Although informed by helpless parents, who protect those who escaped with ransom, those who are not afraid of the police.”
