Bengaluru:
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said a decision on whether to proceed with an enlargement or cabinet reshuffle would be taken after discussions with senior BJP leaders, as he indicated his meeting with the high command was not likely until after the formation of the government in Bihar.
“I will contact (the central management) … I have to go to Delhi, but it looks like I can meet them after the election of the chief minister of Bihar. I will look at things and leave,” Mr. Yediyurappa said told reporters.
When asked if this will be an expansion or a cabinet reshuffle, he said it will depend on what Delhi leaders say.
Political activity has intensified within the ruling BJP camp in the state, after Yediyurappa said on November 10 that a cabinet reshuffle was on the agenda following the party’s victory in the by-passes of two Assembly constituencies.
The chief minister had said he would travel to New Delhi soon to discuss with the central party leadership in this regard and get their approval, as he hinted at a reshuffle by dropping or inducting some ministers.
Expansion or cabinet reshuffle should be a tightrope walk for Mr Yediyurappa, given that there are too many aspirants.
While many of the old guard like eight-time MP Umesh Katti wait for a chance to be inducted into the ministry, Congress-JD (S) rebels like AH Vishwanath, R Shankar and MTB Nagaraj, who have helped the BJP to come to power and are now part MLC, also aspire to slot machines.
According to the agreement, Mr. Yediyurappa will also have to save space for Munirathna, following his victory over Rajarajeshwari Nagar sits in the bypoll, as well as for Pratap Gowda Patil who must win the Maski bypoll which has not yet been announced. .
The Karnataka cabinet currently has 27 members and seven positions remain vacant.
