Surabaya, Indonesia:
A 100-year-old Indonesian woman has recovered from a coronavirus, making her the country’s oldest survivor of the fatal respiratory disease.
Kamtim, who, like many Indonesians by one name, left the hospital this week after a month of treatment in his hometown of Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city, officials said.
East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa said she hoped that Kamtim’s story would boost residents at risk – the disease is especially dangerous for the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
“I hope his recovery can motivate the elderly during the pandemic,” added Parawansa.
Born in 1920, Kamtim was rushed to hospital last month after showing symptoms and was later confirmed to have contracted the coronavirus.
Siti Aminah, the woman’s daughter-in-law, listed her recovery as “discipline and persistence”.
“Every day, I checked with her nurses and they always told me that she was very strong and diligent in taking her medication,” Aminah told AFP.
“She was very motivated to get better.”
It was not clear how the housebound woman contracted the virus.
“She probably got it when people from the neighborhood came to visit her because she never goes out,” said Aminah.
Indonesia has confirmed more than 26,000 cases of coronavirus and 1,613 deaths.
But the sprawling Southeast Asian archipelago of more than 260 million people has one of the lowest test rates in the world.
Researchers estimate that the actual number of viral infections and deaths is several times the official count.
