Veteran singer S P Balasubrahmanyamhis death left a void in the music industry that can never be filled. The 74-year-old singer, admitted to MGM Healthcare Hospital in Chennai on August 5 after testing positive for COVID-19, died on Friday. His death left the Southern film industry heartbroken with a flood of emotional posts flooding social media. The tributes were led by actors Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, two of S P Balasubrahmanyam’s most frequent collaborators. Mr. Balasubrahmanyam was widely regarded as the voice of three actors – Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Salman Khan.
Rajinikanth tweeted: “RIP Balu sir … you have been my voice for many years … your voice and memories will live with me forever … I will truly miss you.” Kamal Haasan tweeted: “It is my luck that for a long time I was the shadow image of the voice of S P Balasubrahmanyam. His fame will live on for 7 generations.”

Music maestro AR Rahman, who worked closely with S P Balasubrahmanyam in numerous films starting with Rahman’s debut in 1992 Roja, shared a photo of himself and the singer and tweeted: “Devastated”.

Actor Dhanush mourned the veteran singer with these words: “RIP, SPB sir. The voice that will resonate in everyone’s home forever, a family member in every household. S P Balasubrahmanyam was admitted to MGM Healthcare Hospital on August 5 after being diagnosed with coronavirus. Despite testing negative for COVID-19 at the beginning of this month and showing improvement, SPB could not be removed from the ventilator. His condition worsened on Thursday and he died in hospital on Friday afternoon.
S P Balasubrahmanyam, winner of six national awards, had a large body of work covering 40,000 songs in 16 languages. He has worked extensively with Ilaiyaraaja, A R Rahman and other composers. He was also an actor, producer and voice actor. Mr. Balasubrahmanyam received the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan.
