“My biggest concern” is that “this president will try to steal this election,” said Biden.

Washington, United States:

Joe Biden has expressed concern that President Donald Trump will try to “steal” the November election or leave if he loses, prompting the White House on Thursday to criticize the Democrat’s comments as theories of the plot.

“My biggest concern” is that “this president will try to steal this election,” said Biden.

His remarks on The Daily Show which aired on Wednesday evening came during a discussion on the suppression of voters, a hot topic this week after chaotic elections in some states, including Georgia, where the voting machines in plagued by problems and long lines frustrated voters.

“He was a guy who said that all the postal ballots were fraudulent,” said the 77-year-old former vice president about Trump.

Asked by host Trevor Noah if he ever considered that Trump might not leave even if he had not been re-elected, Biden said he did, but said he thought that the military, if necessary, would ensure a peaceful transition of power.

“I am absolutely convinced that they will escort him from the White House with great speed,” said Biden.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany dismissed Biden’s comments as “a ridiculous proposition”.

“Leave it to the Democrats to get out there and stage these conspiracy theories,” she told Fox News.

Trump has repeatedly tweeted disturbing statements over the past few weeks about the vote, including an unproven May 24 assertion that “the Democrats are trying to rig the 2020 elections, plain and simple.”

A tweet two days later, in which Trump said there was “no way” that postal ballots would be “nothing less than substantially fraudulent,” earned the president his first ever fact check by Twitter, which called the message misleading.

Trump’s repeated calls to ban postal voting, even during a pandemic with Americans concerned about unnecessary exposure to the coronavirus, have fueled Democrats’ concerns.

Biden said that several states are taking steps to make it harder for people to vote and that he will therefore send observers “to every district in the country to patrol” against the deprivation of voters’ votes.
