Kashmiri religious and political organizations opposed a reported decision to open vending machines in the valley, prompting the government to state on Sunday that it was not considering such a decision.
The Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), an amalgam of socio-religious organizations, led by Hurriyat Conference President Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, said any administration decision to open liquor stores on the entire length and width of the valley will be strongly opposed. and resisted.
“Government order widely circulating on social media clearly indicating that governments plan to open liquor stores in 67 locations in the Kashmir valley is causing great concern and anxiety among Muslims in the valley,” said MMU said in a statement.
He asked the government to immediately withdraw this “immoral and anti-Islam order”. Kashmir is a predominantly Muslim region.
The Union Territory’s finance department, however, said it had made no political decisions regarding the issuance of fresh liquor licenses in unserved areas.
“No list of unserved areas has been reviewed or approved. No decision will be made without stakeholder participation and due process,” he said.
It has been reported that the administration of Jammu and Kashmir plans to open new liquor stores in the territory of the Union.
The Apni Party, led by Altaf Bukhari, also criticized the government for this.
