Dhanbad deputy commissioner Amit Kumar presented a check for 20,000 rupees to Sonu Khatoon

Ranchi:

Sonu Khatoon, Jharkhand’s promising archer, imitates his champion Deepika Kumari, was broken when his bow broke a few years ago, but intervention by the state government gave him a chance to dream again.

The 18-year-old bronze medalist in the 2011 National School Games U17 category was forced to sell vegetables on the streets of Dhanbad to survive.

The intervention of chief minister Hemant Soren allowed the archer to get ₹ 20,000 from Dhanbad’s deputy commissioner, Amit Kumar, on Wednesday.

“The chief minister was informed by a video showing Sonu Khatoon, who has received several national archery medals, selling vegetables for his living,” said a statement from the chief minister’s office.

The chief minister, he said, asked the deputy commissioner of Dhanbad to provide the necessary assistance to Sonu Khatoon, after which she received immediate financial assistance.

“Today she received a check for ₹ 20,000 in support. The district administration will extend all possible support in the future,” the statement said.

Dhanbad’s assistant commissioner, Amit Kumar, informed the chief minister that Sonu Khatoon was unable to continue his sport after his bow was broken. She has been unable to get a replacement as she struggles to make a living by selling vegetables on the streets of Dhanbad, he said.

Saying it was painful to see the young archer selling vegetables for a living, said Soren, “The state government is taking all measures to map (find) talented athletes and ensure they are linked to all facilities and opportunities. “

Dhanbad District Archery Association secretary Juber Alam said Sonu Khatoon won a bronze medal at the 2011 National School Games.
