New Delhi:

A day after the launch of a SpaceX rocket carrying two NASA astronauts from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Indian Space Research Organization congratulated the two organizations on Monday and described the manned space mission as “historic”.

“Congratulations to #NASA and #SpaceX for the first historic launch of the manned mission after 2011. Excellent work!” ISRO tweeted.

On Sunday, SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft with NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley successfully docked at the International Space Station.

The duo entered the ISS at 1:02 p.m. EST (1702 GMT), dressed in black polo shirts and khaki pants. They were welcomed by the American astronaut Chris Cassidy, as well as by the cosmonauts Anatoli Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner.

The mission was the first between a private organization and a government-funded organization, heralding the dawn of commercial space travel. The launch on Saturday is also important because it was the first manned flight from American soil in almost a decade.

India has also prepared the ground for its first manned space mission, “Gaganyaan”. The ambitious project of 10,000 crore rupees is expected to be launched in 2022, the year of India’s 75th anniversary of independence. Four Indian Air Force fighter pilots selected as potential mission candidates are undergoing training in Moscow.
