Bombay:
Actor Ishaan Khatter, who stars as Maan Kapoor in The adaptation of Vikram Seth’s novel by Mira Nair A decent boy, says her character’s relationship with Tabu’s Saeeda Bai has a “forbidden romance” feel, but it’s shown in a gorgeous, layered way, PTI news agency reported. Khatter made his television debut with the BBC six-episode drama, directed by Nair, which is known for its critically acclaimed international hits such as Salaam Bombay, Monsoon wedding and Namesake. Vikram Seth’s novel traces the fortunes of four great families in northern India in 1951, a time when the country forged its own identity as an independent nation by planning to go to the polls for its first democratic general election.
In the series, Ishaan Khatter plays the wayward son of a politician. “It’s a rare relationship even today. In the story, in the narrative, it’s kind of a forbidden romance. She is a Muslim courtesan, he is the son of a minister of a Hindu family and almost half her age. He is very despised in the social strata of Maan. (But) It’s a really great relationship, ”Khatter told PTI in an interview.
the Dhadak star, whom actor Shahid Kapoor’s younger half-brother, said playing Maan was the highlight of his career. “Mira di’s point of view is very beautiful. It’s very deep and layered, it’s not frivolous. We both were aware that characters can’t be uncomfortable and that ‘is not possible because it is not written that way. I don’t know. how often roles like this will be written. This is one of the highlights for me, “he said. he adds.
Praise for co-star Tabu’s ability to seamlessly transform into her characters, Ishaan Khatter said that only “an actor of his caliber, depth and understanding” can do justice to Saeeda Bai, a courtesan with a poet’s heart.
“She adapts perfectly to any world she finds herself in, it doesn’t feel like an effort. There is no awkwardness, stress or weirdness, she is very easy going and at ease. “he said, calling Tabu one of his favorite players in the industry. .
Describing Maan as a “maverick,” Ishaan Khatter said he relied primarily on the script to play the role.
“My character works at his own pace, doesn’t bother to bow to conventions. If he feels something is going right, he will follow him. He is the black sheep of the family. His father fights against the zamindari and wants his son to get involved and understand the value of things. But Maan is on his own way. He is not reckless but he is reckless. He is an unpredictable character. “
The actor said that when he started filming for the series, he read parts of the novel to understand his character’s motivations. “I was given the script straight away, which had eight episodes with 500 odd pages. The novel is approximately 1,500 odd-numbered pages. I decided that I didn’t want to read the novel because they had to distill it into eight episodes which then became six episodes. I didn’t want to get too caught up in things that we weren’t going to show, ”he said.
The actor said that while he relied heavily on the script, he read portions of Seth’s novel to soak up details about his character’s background the night before his scenes were filmed.
Ishaan Khatter pocketed the role even before his two films were released – Beyond the clouds and Dhadak. It was an eight- to nine-month journey from casting to pre-production, before he knew he was on board.
“Hearing her name (Mira Nair) and being an admirer of her work, I went for an audition. I was given a scene and got called two days later as Mira di was coming into town and there was to be a second audition that she could then take to England for the BBC and Lookout Point, the other producers He said, adding that he had received an email about his selection a week after the audition.
The actor shot for A decent boy between the hours of Kaali peei, his next film in Hindi. The series began airing in the UK from July. It will soon be available worldwide, including India, on Netflix.
Besides Ishaan Khatter and Tabu, the series also features Tanya Maniktala as the protagonist of the story Lata Mehra, Rasika Dugal as her sister, Ram Kapoor as minister Mahesh Kapoor and Maan’s father, Mahira Kakkar as Rupa Mehra, Vivaan Shah as Varun Mehra , Shahana Goswami as Meenakshi Chatterji Mehra, Namit Das as Haresh Khanna and Danesh Razvi as Kabir Durrani.
